इसका अर्थ है अंतिम यज्ञ। आज भी शवयात्रा के आगे घर से अग्नि जलाकर ले जाई जाती है। इसी से चिता जलाई जाती है। आशय है विवाह के बाद व्यक्ति ने जो अग्नि घर में जलाई थी उसी से उसके अंतिम यज्ञ की अग्नि जलाई जाती है। मृत्यु के साथ ही व्यक्ति स्वयं इस अंतिम यज्ञ में होम हो जाता है। हमारे यहां अंत्येष्टि को इसलिए संस्कार कहा गया है कि इसके माध्यम से मृत शरीर नष्ट होता है। इससे पर्यावरण की रक्षा होती है।
अन्त्येष्टी संस्कार के समय भी वेद मन्त्र पढ़े जाते हैं, पुराने समय में "नरमेध यज्ञ" जिसका वास्तविक अर्थ अन्त्येष्टी संस्कार था.. उसका गलत अर्थ निकाल कर बलि मान लिया गया था l
